Urbanism

public works is a not-for-profit critical design practice set up in 2004 working across architecture, art and performance.

We seek out opportunities for community-driven development to nurture and promote the rights of communities, environments and ecologies.

As a not-for-profit all of our projects aim to directly serve the communities within which we are working. We build long-sustained relationships based on trust that enables co-authorship. We use different modes of social engagement suited to a community's needs and capacities, be they playful, political, infrastructural or academic.

Our outputs are not limited to buildings or art objects; they incorporate discursive events, prototypes, circular systems, campaigns, governance models, food, urban strategies, participatory art and architecture at all scales. They are defined by what works for each collaboration and its context, so while every public works project embodies the same values, the look and feel changes.
