This week we've been reflecting on the theme of community in the UK, but more importantly focussing on the representation of the queer black community.
Last week was the 15th birthday for UK Black Pride - Europe's largest celebration for LGBTQ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Latin American and Middle Eastern descent.
We've been listening to UK Black Pride's Head of Comms, Josh Rivers, and his podcast Busy Being Black which explores how we live in the fullness of our queer Black lives.
Through conversations with health professionals, activists, organisers and thinkers, Josh records an ongoing sub-series called Theory in the Flesh which explores what we can be doing as interconnected communities to support each other.
Quotes:
"I borrow the term “theory in the flesh” from – and with gratitude to – our feminist and QTIPOC (queer, trans and intersex people of colour) elders to draw attention to the health inequalities and disparities experienced by queer Black people in the UK" - Josh Rivers
"I use “theory in the flesh” as an intellectual and emotional framework through which to explore and understand the corollary factors that continue to impact our health." - Josh Rivers
Theory in the Flesh is funded by the British Podcast Awards Fund and Wellcome Trust.
