Black History & Anti-Racist Toolkit for LGBTQ+ Families by Family Equality

This week we are highlighting resources around Black history, Black excellence, race and racism for LGBTQ+ families as we head into Pride Month!

Family Equality, a national America nonprofit organisation has established an extensive ongoing bank of resources to deepen knowledge and encourage conversations at home around anti-racism through age-appropriate activities for parents, caregivers, and children.

The toolkit includes a range of links, resources, recommendations and activities for ages 0–4 years old, 5–9 years old, 10–15 years old, 15 years old and up, and a collection of additional recommended resources to continue the conversations such as how to build your own anti-racist library of award-winning Black authors and illustrators, key tv shows, films and podcasts.

For ages 0–4 years old, the toolkit encourages little ones to break out the crayons and get stuck into the #LGBTQFamiliesforBlackLives colouring sheets to learn about Black LGBTQ+ heroes throughout history; sit down for storytime and hear from Black LGBTQ+ educators and content creators—and non-Black LGBTQ+ allies; or even have a scavenger hunt! And for 5-9 years old, you can extend these conversations through creating posters or drawing with chalk on your pavement —highlighting that racism happens in public.

For slightly older children (10-5), you can begin to cement their sense of identity and actively engage them in anti-racist work by encouraging your children to find and contact your elected officials and urge them to be more anti-racist! And for the older teenagers (15+) you can sit down with your teenagers and explore some key advocates on social media and create a conversation where you aren’t simply “teaching” your teenager about this movement, but where you’re also allowing yourself to listen to and learn from them.

Follow this link to explore the great resources on offer and start or continue your conversations at home to achieve a world in which every LGBTQ+ person, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or race, can be celebrated!
