Black Digital Archiving Project

This week we are looking at The Black Digital Archiving Project by visual artist and arts educator; Rudy Loewe, co-founder of Black In The Day; Tania Nwachukwu and information governance and data protection manager; Ghislaine Yimga!

The Black Digital Archiving Project investigates ways in which history can be made accessible to Black communities in order to see, hear and forefront experiences from the Black perspective and their lived experiences.

The project demonstrates the potential of digital archives and includes a local collections map, a podcast and a research tab. The Black Digital Archiving Project aims to “provide a springboard for further investigation, discussion and collaboration necessary to enact future change”

The Oral Tradition Podcast investigates themes of celebration, education, loss, migration and resistance. Previous episodes have featured Kelly Foster, who charts the history of archiving black materials in the UK; Eric Huntley, who discusses the challenges of finding homes for Black archival materials, the lack of care and acknowledgment of these materials and Lavinya Stennett, founder of the Black Curriculum amongst other speakers.

The Digital Archiving Project also consists of a map that allows viewers to find a local archive consisting of Black history collections across the UK. This map illustrates where collections are held, the type of materials included and details about their online accessibility.
