PARK ART in Haringey

Ben Long (1978 – ) was born in Lancaster, UK, and studied at Camberwell College of Arts, London, graduating in 2001. His practice adapts utilitarian materials and functional objects in ways that explore the relationship between pragmatic working culture and the creation of avant-garde art.

Embarking on a literal and metaphorical artistic journey, Long started out by creating works for 'The Great Travelling Art Exhibition' in 2001. These were temporary drawings made in the dirt gathered on shutters of haulage trucks, and described by art journalist Francesca Gavin as: “Street art, shaken by the neck and invigorated with original and startling ideas”. In 2002, the works were selected by Sir Peter Blake for the Prospects Contemporary Drawing Prize. Speaking about the project to Maev Kennedy of The Guardian, Long described the artworks simply as: “Galleries without walls, art connected with everyday life.”
