Artist Ruth Beale presented a series of interactive events which explored Epping Forest and the surrounding district as part of the development for a future project with UP Projects.

Looking at the story of Lopping Rights within Epping Forest, Beale questioned our understanding of public space and the various rights, by-laws and borders that govern our notion of ‘common land’.

Epping Forest has a unique relationship to its neighbouring communities, having been dedicated to the people by Queen Victoria in 1882, managed by the City of London and historically providing local residents with vital resources. As this relationship evolves and shifts we asked; what does the forest, land rights and acts that govern it mean to us today?

The People's Forest is commissioned in partnership with Epping Forest District Council.
