Working in close collaboration with local residents and Islington Council's landscape architects over five years, artist/architect duo Sans façon have created a beautiful new social space for Churnfield Green in Finsbury Park. Launched in October 2014, The Field combines a unique elliptical sculptural seating area with curved lamp posts, which playfully frame the space.
Previously the derelict plot of land had been plagued by anti-social behaviour, so a residents steering group was established, in order to ensure that the new park space was responsive to their concerns. In addition, Sans façon hosted creative consultation events, ranging from screenings, workshops and demonstrations which sought to explore new ways of imagining the space and how the community could interact with it. This activity directly informed the design and landscaping of the final public square.
The Field was commissioned as part of Secret Garden Project by One Housing Group in partnership with Islington Council.
