Keeping the Secret Garden Project growing over the winter months, Markus Vater created a new contemporary folklore for the London, as our second Secret Garden Project artist in residence.
Producing a series of illustrations, an animation and publishing a new fairy-tale, Vater explored our human relationships with plants and nature, through his uniquely dark but humorous style.
The limited edition publication (Edition of 500), entitled ‘The Story of Hubert Todd’, is an illustrated poem which follows the tale of an isolated man. Jaded by modern life and detached from his family, Hubert Todd slowly turns in to a tree, offering a timely commentary on how we have become detached from each other and nature within the urban environment.
Markus Vater was commissioned as part of Secret Garden Project and supported by Arts Council England.
