"So much more than cinema"

"A magical idea... as a way to activate a lot of city with a small object, The Floating Cinema is hard to beat." — The Observer

The Floating Cinema is an award-winning structure conceived and commissioned by UP Projects and designed by Morris + Company. The structure is a mechanism through which artists’ films, independent cinema and archive footage can be brought outside of the gallery or cinema space and presented in public locations.

Since 2011, The Floating Cinema has presented annual programmes of outdoor screenings, as well as on board presentations, talks, performances, workshops and events for audiences across the country. From 2011 – 2015, UP Projects collaborated with artists Somewhere (Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie) who devised artist-led programming as well as created new films for The Floating Cinema. See below for information on previous seasons including Extra-Ordinary, Extra-International, Extra-Terrestrial, Another Country and On Tour.

For the 6th and final season, UP Projects commissioned: On the Bench by Harry Meadley, a work which took centre stage of In Dialogue which saw The Floating Cinema touring from Sheffield to Hull during the summer of 2017. See below for more details.

The Floating Cinema was built with support from The Legacy List (charity of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which merged with Foundation for Future London) with corporate partner Bloomberg as part of Bloomberg East in partnership with the Canal & River Trust and is a legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
