The Greenwich Peninsula is one of London’s largest urban redevelopments. Located on the Meridian Line, the distinctive landform of the Peninsula is instantly recognisable, with the O2 arena at its tip and bounded by the River Thames on three sides. Over the next decade the Greenwich Peninsula will be transformed into a mixed-used destination with five new distinct districts offering new homes and public facilities, including a large central park, a new school, an enhanced retail offer, a dedicated design district and a brand new film studio complex. Central to Knight Dragon’s vision for the Peninsula is a commitment to nurturing a high quality and progressive cultural offer, available to residents and visitors alike.
UP Projects were commissioned to develop a framework for how public artworks could be integrated into the fabric of this new neighbourhood. This included a set of commissioning principles and case studies for how progressive public artworks could emphasise the unique character of the site, celebrate transition, build a creative community and encourage engagement and participation. At the heart of the strategy was the client’s desire to create a 5km public promenade that would have art at its centre.
