Stop and Smell the Flowers by Holly Graham
An interim installation, part of Stop and Smell the Flowers by Holly Graham will be unveiled showcasing a series of campaign posters which have been developed through a participatory process that has to date involved over 100 young people local to Edgware, through a series of workshops led by Graham. It aims to raise awareness of the climate emergency, and in particular issues around access to clean air and green space through the collaged image of visions of a green future for Edgware with an accompanying digital display. The posters are printed on blueback paper and have been treated with a coating that absorbs impurities from the air. This interim display is the first step towards the creation of a new more permanent artwork which will be installed in early 2024 and located at 158 Station Road (a prominent location on Edgware high street) by Graham and will take the form of a text-based mural inspiring action today to inform what Edgware becomes tomorrow.
Care & Magic by Ruth Beale
At Edgware Library, Ruth Beale engages with staff of and visitors through Care & Magic, a project with targeted activities and subtle gestures of repair and rejuvenation, demonstrating how artist-led activity can serve to engage new audiences and produce lasting change. Taking inspiration from the modernist fixtures as well as the library’s photo archive, the project will result in a series of lasting “care” interventions, including a new rug for the children’s library inspired by the original 1960s Library wallpaper and a new vinyl artwork for the exterior of the building informed by the conversations that have taken place through the events held. Hear a special performance by Harpist, Natalie Lurie and a talk by Ruth Beal on Care & Magic at 14:30 at Edgware Library.
Burble by Emma Smith
Burble by Emma Smith is a site-responsive performance inspired by the social spaces and sounds of Station Road in Edgware. In the greetings people give to one another across the counter and the social interactions of friends and communities meeting up, humans subconsciously create interlocking harmonies and musical patterns that bond us to one another. This work will bring together the music of these voices from along the length of Station Road creating a site-specific song cycle, in seven languages, collectively contributed to by local residents. A score based on these recordings will be performed at 15:30 on 23 November outside Edgware Station as a multi-part choral song collaboratively produced with local singers to bring voices of the street together. Burble has been developed through a socially engaged process with recording sessions taking place with local businesses, Edgware Primary School and Edgware Library.
