'Coming Together' tries to help children grow up with a healthy self-identity and sense of belonging. The initiative aims to aid the creation of a diverse world through research-based, child-centered resources that include the whole family, inviting parents and caregivers, educators, and providers to help children celebrate their own race, ethnicity, and culture.
“Hey Elmo, how would you feel if I don’t like you ‘cause I don’t like the colour red?” - Tamir
Topics such as identity, ethnicity and acceptance are discussed through a variety of resources where racial differences are explained to children. One video that has gained international recognition includes the How to be an Upstander to Racism Song, which sees the characters, Elmo, Abby, Gabrielle, and Tamir learning what you can say and do when you see someone being treated unfairly because of the color of their skin (or fur).
