About this event
Join us to hear artists Jasleen Kaur and Beverley Bennett reflect on and raise questions about what constitutes a collaborative art practice.
They will explore ideas around long-term agendas, slow ways of working, and working with people's testimonies. They will discuss the processes involved in working collaboratively and how care informs each of their practices.
The talk will take Kaur’s commission Gut Feelings Meri Jaan at Touchstones, Rochdale as a starting point for the conversation, and will touch upon both artists’ past contributions to Constellations, UP Projects’ artist development programme for socially engaged practitioners.
The event will take place in person at Manchester Art Gallery.
Artists in conversation: Jasleen Kaur & Beverley Bennett is produced by UP Projects in collaboration with Manchester Art Gallery.

Gut Feeling Meri Jaan by Jasleen Kaur, commissioned by UP Projects in partnership with Touchstones Rochdale.
23 October 2021 – 12 February 2022
Gut Feeling Meri Jaan responds to the local archives held at Touchstones by forefronting the voices of migrant communities within the social history of Rochdale which have historically been marginalised and misrepresented.
Created in collaboration with a group of women and gender non conforming participants from Rochdale’s local South Asian community, Kaur brings into question formal systems of remembrance and meddles with the archive: What do we find when we go looking for ourselves in the archive? How are we remembered? And how can we alter the course of history through a new script?
About Jasleen Kaur

Recent and upcoming commissions include Wellcome Collection, UP Projects, Glasgow Women’s Library, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Eastside Projects and Hollybush Gardens. Her work is part of the permanent collection of Touchstones Rochdale, Government Art Collection and Crafts Council. About Beverley Bennett
Beverley Bennett is an artist-filmmaker whose work revolves around the possibilities of drawing, performance and collaborative experiments with sound. Her practice connects multiple ways of making. The first of these is a concern with the importance of sound in art. The second is an investigation of the idea of The Archive. She often begins projects by creating / adding to her own extensive personal archives of interviews, using them for preliminary research and experimentation and the third is collaboration. This is frequently through socially political work with other creative and fine artists, community members, young children and their families. Beverley’s practice provides a space for participants to become collaborators and provides a point of focus from where to unpick ideas around what constitutes an art practice and for whom art is generated. Beverley has exhibited and worked internationally including at the CinemaAfrica Film Festival, Stockholm, Wysing Art Centre, Cambridgeshire, Grand Union, Birmingham, Peckham Platform, London, and is currently fellow at Serpentine Galleries.
